In 1987, Japan
introduced the cross 25 barcode and standardized it for the
identification and management of storage and transportation
units. The EAN specification uses the interleaved 25 barcode as
the standard barcode for storage and transportation units.
Interleaved
2of5 barcode is a continuous two-width barcode symbol capable of
encoding an even number of digits. Its predecessor, the standard
or industrial 2of5 barcode, could only encode information in the
width of the bar, not in intervals.
The Interleaved
2of5 barcode was invented by Intermec in the United States in
1972. It was widely used in the fields of warehousing and heavy
industry in the early days, and was later also used in the field
of transportation and packaging.
